"Career choices for today…and tomorrow"

Resume Writing Service Alert

When choosing a resume writing service make sure you are well informed about how they will prepare your resume.  Some companies use templates with a set format and content.  They plug in certain key words about your experience into their template and will remove parts that don't apply to your experience.  The finished product looks appealing to your eye; however, it has almost the exact wording and set up as every resume they have "written" over the past 6 months.

Here are some questions you can ask to help you avoid this situation:

  1. Will we be sitting down together to discuss my prior experience and education?
  2. Will I see several rough drafts that I can choose from?
  3. Can I see different resume formats you have recently used?
  4. How will my resume be provided to me?
  5. If any changes need to be made in 6 months will you do it at no extra charge?

The last issue to address with your resume is to be sure it can be electronically scanned.  Avoid inserting tables, cells and excessive formatting.  It is important for you (and possibly a recruiter) to be able to quickly and efficiently send your resume via email to a prospective employer.

Consider your resume as an extension of YOU.  It needs to be professional, clean and up-to-date.  Remember, this is usually your first step in the door.
